Leadership: Getting a Running Start

Leadership is one of those words that gets bandied around a lot when it comes to assigning attributes to executives in the C suite. Studies show that 40 percent of those who take on senior management positions will fail in their first 18 months. That’s why the first 100 days of any President is so critical. It sets the tone for how the executive thinks and what to expect.

For a first-time leader, it’s important to address what’s been going wrong and create a road map for some early wins. Lew Platt, former CEO at Hewlett-Packard put it like this: “If you can find a few things that were serious flaws in the organization and fix them quickly, you can establish your credibility as a leader very fast.” It’s important not to get mired down and to communicate the strategy clearly and efficiently to the board, your internal executive team and to important stakeholders. You need to speak to your board and stakeholders about the business and understand their vision and the position of the business in the marketplace.

Having completed that due diligence as soon as possible, it is essential you begin your first branding strategy and identify the direction that needs to be taken with your product and core customers to achieve financial and marketing objectives. You can get an early win from turning around a failing product, from a creative acquisition, from a team spirit that raises profits or creates new customers.

The biggest challenge when it comes to leadership, however, is people. It’s imperative to know who your direct reports are, what they bring to the table and how they perform.
